URGENT: History of the stool (chair)?
hey guys i need to do a sheet on the history of the stool (chair stool), can anyone give me a good link i cant find anything 
Experts say that the history of stools is rather like the chicken and the egg conundrum, as in which came first. The stool or the chair? The chair or the stool? Is the stool technically a chair? Is the chair a stool? Isn’t a stool one of those brown things that come out of the hole in between your bum cheeks? NO! Never confuse these two types of stool. I can’t think of any occassion in which you would get confused, but be prepared.
Why make a stool? A chair with nowhere to rest your back – it’s insane! I know that’s what you’re thinking, but all will be clearer when I tell you the events that led to their invention.
The stool was first invented by a Swiss woman by the name of Maria Schitonstool in 1749 and was born out of necessity. You see, Maria Schitonstool was a habitual gambler and frittered away what money she earned from singing in the street and sharpening pencils for the aristocracy, on horses, lottery scratch cards and in the illegal casino’s of Zurich. This obviously led to cash flow problems and Miss.Schitonstool would often have to sell her personal belongings and furnishings to pay the rent. Sometimes she was so broke that she would be unable to pay her heating bills and was forced into using furniture and fittings in order to make a fire to keep warm. But she overcame all of what life had to throw at her, stood tall and got to where she wanted to be in life.
She reminds me of Geri Halliwell quite a lot in that she has also overcame all the criticism that has been thrown her way and, along with her four friends, is top of the heap once more. For those of you who’s first time this is on my site I recently met Geri and went on a couple of dates with her. For those who have read about this will know that my heart hasn’t leaped this much in years – I really want to give her one. Alas though, I think our budding love affair may be over before it’s properly begun. Since our last date, at Spearmint Rhino, I haven’t heard from her, despite leaving messages on her phone. I suppose what with her tour she’s very busy, but if you’re reading this Geri, call me.
Anyway, sorry I’m afraid I’ve let my private life infringe on my professional one and all I can do is promise you that it will never happen again. You’ve come here to learn, not hear about my problems.
So, the stool. The stool was invented by accident when Maria Schitonstool was finding wooden furniture to keep her fire going one particularly cold night in Decenber 1749. The only wood she had left in the house apart from her bed was her chairs, ‘but what to sit on if they go into the fire?’, she thought. So, she sawed the backs off all her chairs and inadvertently invented the stool. Soon, word got around the underprivileged and poor of Switzerland, leading to more chairs being chopped up into stools for fire wood. It was then quickly picked up by the upper classes and stools were very much in vogue (the magazine), earning Maria Schitonstool fame and fortune.
So it was the chair that came first and then developed or evolved, if you like, into a stool. Just as the chicken came first, with it evolving over many years to give birth to their offspring in eggs as a safety precaution. I don’t see where all the confusion comes from myself.
